How to Archive and Build Your First iPhone App for Distribution using Xcode 4

iPhone Apps Rule the World

Why did I write this post?

I wrote this post because the first time I tried to archive my first iPhone App and upload the binary to Apple was an absolute nightmare. It took forever to say the least.

Well, 5 hours to be exact. But, it seemed like forever.

If you have never had the privilege of doing so and/or are new to developing Apps for the iPhone; then consider yourself lucky.

I’m not going to lie. It sucks.

Well, it sucks at first but it does get better.

Once you get your head around it, it’s not so bad.

I’ve learned quite a bit this last month and continue to do so.

If you are new to developing iPhone Apps and have never archived and uploaded your first binary for Apple to check out. Then this post is for you. I am new myself and wish to pass on my experience to new iPhone App developers.

If you are an experienced App Developer and wish to step in and pass any valuable knowledge on. That too would be very much appreciated.

iPhone Apps

How to?

The process of building your iPhone App and uploading the binary to iTunes Connect is quite a process. Well, not really but at first it is. After doing it a few times it is not so bad.

I wrote this post so that I can use it for reference down the line. It is there just in case I forget or need help for my next App I can come back here for a refresher.

I’m happy to say that after uploading my first App and going crazy for 5 hours trying to figure out why my code did not validate. I now have the process down pat thanks to the following links.

The second App I submitted validated on the second try and the third App I submitted validated the first time. So, I’m super stoked that I have made it through the initial learning curve of submitting iPhone Apps.

Again, I’m not some super App Guru nor do I claim to be. I’m just learning as well.

iPhone App Build and Distribution Links

Here are the links that I used to help me get my first iPhone App submitted. I still take a quick gander at them when it is time for me to upload my App to Apple.

Although, in saying that I probably don’t need to anymore.

They did help me out tremendously though.

Links

Checklist for Submitting an App to the App Store
You should read here first. If you have never built and Archived your App for you to submit to iTunes Connect. I recommend reading the short article at the above link. It has everything you need to know to get your App ready for submission. Very short and very easy to follow.

How to build and submit iPhone app to AppStore with Xcode 4
I recommend reading here second. If you have done everything correctly this article is a breeze and should quickly get you on your way.

Another Building Your App for Distribution Article
This is another great article that is very short and easy to follow. However it is written for Xcode 3.

Apple iOS Development Article on Publishing Your Application for Testing

I recommend reading Distributing Applications in the iOS Developer Libray. It gives you a basic understanding of how everything works. Check it out!

iPhone Set UP
This a definite must read if you want to set up your iPhone for testing through your Mac using Xcode. If you have never done it before.

Setting up your iPhone so that you can use it as a developer to test your Apps on can be quite daunting. This article was very helpful for me.

My advice is to read slow and take your time. Don’t skip over anything. All the directions are there and you should be able to get it right the first time through.

IPhone App Man!

Questions?

If you have any questions about submitting your iPhone App just leave a comment. I would be more then happy to try to help. I know how frustrating it can be at first.

You gotta start somewhere though.

If I hadn’t done anything at all I would still be sitting here wishing I had Apps in the App Store.

Now is the time!

Good luck and thanks for reading.
