Posting the Job
I have finally taken the leap and have put up an ad on oDesk for my first iPhone App. If you’ve been following me for some time now you would know that it is with iPhone Apps that I hope to make passive income and kick my part time job to the curb. I would like to earn enough money to continue the lifestyle that my wife and I live. I still want to travel with my lovely wife and spend more time with my family.
My Experience with oDesk
This is my first experience using oDesk. I have used Elance before but I chose oDesk for the iPhone App development as I found oDesk has lots of great candidates that suited my needs. I also found that the job posting process to be a lot more helpful and efficient. I really like how the skills required/wanted dropbox works. Not only do you get a huge list of skills to search through and choose from for your job, it also has suggestions that pop up as you type. Similar to Google’s Prediction API.
When using oDesk to hire a candidate for your job I noticed that one difference from Elance is that you can choose a flat rate or you can choose an hourly rate. The oDesk default is an hourly rate. Odesk also is so kind to let you know that most people choose the hourly rate option.
Thanks oDesk!
I am used to choosing a flat rate. However, I did choose to go with an hourly rate this time. I have never done that before either, so that’s another first. I simply chose to go with the hourly rate this time because I thought I would get less candidates if I chose the flat rate. I will keep you informed as the job continues and let you know how it goes and what I thought about choosing the hourly rate and if I would choose it again.
The Job Posting
My job has only been posted for not even 24 hours so far and already I have received 13 applicants who have made proposals for my job! That’s great!
It has also created a lot of work for me as well as I will reviewing and sorting through all these applicants and choosing an iPhone App Developer who I feel is suitable for my first App. It is definitely a lot of work and very time consuming. I am hoping to find somebody that will do a fantastic job and somebody that I will want to rehire again for future iPhone Apps. Basically I am looking for a long term business relationship with my App Developer.
Fingers crossed.
Are You Looking to Hire Somebody for Your First iPhone App?
If you are, and have never done so before keep in touch as I will be writing about my experience. Good or bad. It is my aim to share with you my experience with using an oDesk iPhone App Developer and all the ups and downs that may come my way and to learn from any mistakes made. I will then pass that information on to you, my readers so that you will not make the same mistakes as I.
I am hoping for the smoothest ride as possible but as well all know things never go as planned. I do feel very optimistic about the whole experience though and going from what I have gathered from other people’s experiences who have used Elance or oDesk to hire somebody to develop or code your App for you is that it is best to be prepared as much as possible and to be very, very clear and concise on what it is exactly that you want done.
That I will do.
I chose oDesk over Elance because from what I saw at oDesk there were a lot more experienced, qualified and established iPhone Developers on there as opposed to Elance. This could be untrue however. I do not know. It was just an observation. It was definitely a lot easier to find several iPhone App developers with a lot of impressive feedback as well and with several recommendations from previous clients.
The interface at Elance just felt clunky and inefficient. I found it hard to search for the information that I was after and when I did find the information that I was after it was just more sorting on top of sorting. Very time consuming. I felt it was more difficult then it should have been and took even more time to get the information that I wanted. It was basically just a lot of sorting and wasting time. The search feature didn’t work as well at Elance as it does for oDesk either.
What are Your Thoughts?
Have you hired an iPhone App or Android Developer from oDesk before? What was your experience? Good? Bad? Ugly?

Thanks for sharing so much informative post on iPhone App job…
