What is a Real Job?

What is a Real Job Anyway?

So I got into a conversation the other day. Surprisingly enough, it had to do with making iPhone Apps.

For the topic of this post it can be almost anything. As long as it is anything that allows you to make enough money online and support yourself, your family, and doing so by making that money online.

A Real Job Is..

Something You Wake Up and Travel To?

According to this person’s logic that I was speaking to; if you are not waking up, going to either a career job at the office or even a job at the local grocery store; then you do not have a real job.

Ha! Are you crazy?

Take note that it didn’t matter if it was a minimum wage job at McDonalds or a six figure corporate career at (insert your favorite evil corporation here).

I thought that this ill figured and narrow mined logic was only unbalanced but totally insane! To top things up even more this was coming from a very wealthy business owner.

I really couldn’t understand it and still don’t.

What is Rational?

Sad Business Man wishes he had Passive Income

The rationale weighs out something like this.

If you make money by working at home, traveling, or from anywhere on the planet either by building websites, advertising, affiliate marketing, developing iPhone Apps or any other legal way of doing so.

Then this is not a real job.

I guess thousands of highly trained and educated iPhone Developers and Programmers out there do not have Real Jobs.

Sorry guys!

Getting up in the morning and going to your office, store, restaurant or whatever for 8 hours or more and then returning home after your hard days work. Then by that logic you have a real job.

Hilarity ensues

I thought it was funny when it didn’t matter how much money it was that person A or B was making.

Let’s say that Person A has the Real job. They wake up every morning and go to McDonalds to flip burgers for 8 hours and then return home. Person A makes $15,000-$20,000 a year.

I’m just taking a blind stab in the dark here. I am not sure about how much a full time, minimum wage employee makes at McDonalds. Forgive me in advance here if I am wrong.

That is a Real Job.

Now, Person B wakes up and goes to the office to push paper all day long. Person B just happens to be a six figure suit from (insert your favorite evil corporation here).

Person B is pretty well off and make $150,000 annually.

Again, that is a Real Job.

Last but certainly not least. Let’s take a look at Person C. This fortunate soul makes over $300,000 a year! Person C does this entirely from home.

In fact Person C doesn’t have to wake up, get ready, sit in traffic for an hour or more. Person C also gets to stay at home with his family.

If Person C really wanted to they could even take their show on the road and work from Grandma’s house, their sisters house or on vacation in Hawaii if they wanted to.

As long as Person C has a connection to the internet they could work from anywhere on the planet.

However, that is NOT a Real Job.

That’s not coming from me. I didn’t say that.

The person whom I had the conversation with said that. That is their logic.

Lots of Money Means a Real Job!?

Happy Man earns Passive Income

Now, for kicks and giggles. Let’s take a look at our friends over at Angry Birds. The Angry Birds developers are worth over a billion dollars now.

So according to the logic I have been churning on and on about. Do our Angry Birds devs have a real job?

Why, yes they do!

Apparently when you break the 1 Billion dollar barrier you now have a real job.

Come on guys. Where is this hypocritical, unbalanced coming from? Totally asinine, I tell you.

At any rate. If me being successful at making money online, and selling iPhone Apps means that I don’t have a Real Job.

Well then I guess I don’t have a Real Job.

And that makes me Happy.

  1. The main reason that I try to make money online is to avoid having a textbook “real job”!

  2. I just saw the Italian Job for the first time and loved it. Whenever I see movies like that, I think to myself, “If I wasn’t an honest person, I’d be a professional thief.” The ingenuity, planning, and excitement would be great. That made me think, maybe there is a real job out there that I don’t know about that offers these elements. What can you think of?
